Open House and Chance for Informal Comment
               Pena Blanca Lake, Arizona
               Coronado, National Forest

The Coronado National Forest is hosting an Open House and tour opportunity at Pena Blanca Lake in Southeastern Arizona on Saturday, April 24th, at 10:00 AM.

Pena Blanca Lake was dredged in 2009 as part of a clean-up of trace mercury in the lake's sediments.  The resulting storage and encapsulation of the sediments altered the landscape around Pena Blanca Lake creating approximately 20 acres of gently rolling ground suitable for recreation amenities such as campgrounds, picnicking, boat rental, convenience facilities, food services, and other convenience amenities.

The area has been closed for nearly 18 months and April 24th is a chance for the public and interested businesses to meet with the Nogales District Ranger, Kent Ellett, and forest recreation staff to share ideas about future recreation opportunities.  Pena Blanca is located 9 miles west of Interstate 19 on HIghway 289 approximately 17 miles northwest of Nogales, Arizona.  The Open House will be held at the Upper Thumbrock Picnic Area and last approximately 2 hours.

In past years, Pena Blanca Lake afforded recreation activities much like those of popular Patagonia Lake State Park and enjoyed significant use.  Part of the revitalization of this area includes a new boat ramp and launch facilities being constructed by the Arizona Game & Fish Department.  And, as surface water capable of suppporting sport and recreational fisheries is so limited in Southeastern Arizona, the District Ranger welcomes a diverse array of comments and ideas in shaping how this resource will serve the public in the future.
