NFRA Executive Committee Travels to Washington D.C. - July 2009
In July, members of NFRA's Executive Committee traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with agency representatives and political contacts regarding key issues affecting our members.
It is always interesting and valuable to meet with the Forest Service in the Washington Office. The headquarters is situated on the Washington Mall - just a block away from the Washington Monument. The historic significance of the area is always very impressive. And - we lucked out with great weather - very fortunate especially in July!
Meetings with the Forest Service included discussions on the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA). Currently, there is a Senate bill to repeal the legislation and the House is working on a bill to amend the Act.
The NFRA group also met with staff from the House Committee on Natural Resources, Subcommittee on National Parks & Forests to learn more about the legislation being worked on to change/amend FLREA. And on the Senate side of Capitol Hill, meetings were held with the Staff for Federal Lands from the Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources.
Meetings also took place with the staff from Senator Feinstein's Office to discuss wilderness issues, particularly as they pertain to commercial horse packing operations.
